About Us
WEGE COMPANY
Welcome to
WEGE COMPANY
WEGE COMPANY is a social enterprise that advocates for a green economy in Burundi through a circular economy. It transforms banana waste, paper waste, and rice straw into inexpensive, reusable, recyclable , and 100 % eco-friendly packaging for replacing plastic packaging materials.
Even though it was launched officially back in April 2021, the idea had started in 2018 when the government of Burundi promulgated a decree No 100/ 009 of 08/ 2018 that prohibits the import, use, fabrication, and commercialization of plastic bags on the national territory of Burundi. (https://bit.ly/3pPXr66).The Plastic overuse had caused an alarming state of earth pollution and climate change in Burundi.
The above decree challenged a lot all the Burundian citizens and industries selling cereals and other bearable products, such as beans, rice, flour, etc. The market at that time did not offer any alternatives or substitutes.
Amid uncertainty about how to carry goods, WEGE COMPANY invented NDIHOSE PACKAGE an eco-friendly package made from banana waste, paper waste, and rice straw. This product kills two birds with one stone: It contributes to preserving the environment and promotes job creation. The biodegradable packaging that we produce is a substitute for polythene plastic bags which pollute the environment and harm life below water.
Actually, we collect banana trash and rice straw from different local farmers after harvesting , paper waste from different waste management companies and printing entities. And it transforms them into eco-friendly packaging that composts within a week after its usage.
WE aim to limit the overuse of plastic packaging materials, which contributes to climate change, animal deaths, and environmental deterioration.
Beyond that, it enhances the value of banana and rice plantations in Burundi.
